Colors skew jewel-box elytra. Segments stunt, not quite joining, as with an apprentice carpenter, torquing, as against a coastal wind. A leg goes missing, a claw absents itself, wings radiate to mere nubs, or one spreads full while the other ribbons to strips, having absorbed more than light, a dark energy, playful, tinkering. And we also, now, soon, someday, sporting extra fingers or toes, hidden cells blooming, or arms and legs ending in nubs, as if the potter tired and set us down.
